Making Memories Project
As memories fade and fail, the Mitchell & Area Community Outreach saw an opportunity to serve the needs of seniors to broaden social contacts and create a lasting legacy based on their life stories.
A grant from the Community Foundation supported the training of staff and volunteers in becoming Life Story Recorders and the purchase of materials. The recorders were paired with seniors and spent time getting to know them to create a permanent album of their life story. This keepsake becomes a permanent record for family, friends, and future generations to read.
Seniors gained stimulating contacts, received a handsome album filled with memories, and improved their sense of self worth.
The project brought new volunteers to the Mitchell & Area Community Outreach and staff can continue to train new Life Story Recorders. It also provided a means of strengthening outreach to seniors and this program will continued to be offered as part of the Friendly Visiting Program.
